The Fifth/Eighth Avenue/Quarry
Street Methodist Church was organized on June 6, 1848. It held the name Quarry
Street Church until 1867. The cornerstone of the first church building was laid on
August 15, 1848 with the dedication taking place in July, 1849. The Newark
Daily Advertiser published a notice to change the name of the Quarry Street ME
Church to the Eighth Avenue ME church on January 12, 1867. The church was
enlarged in 1858 and again in 1873.
