3.    At the age of 15, despite his long work hours in the silk mill, Ellenstein turned to amateur boxing and won every one of his amateur bouts over two years as a 115 pound flyweight to become the Metropolitan Boys' Champion.

        In 1907, he decided to turn professional.  He fought his first professional fight as "Kid" Meyer at Paterson's Apollo Hall.  But his pro boxing career was quickly cut short by a disapproving mother.
