At the age of 15, despite his long work hours in the silk mill, Ellenstein turned to amateur boxing and won every one of his amateur bouts over two years as a 115 pound flyweight to become the Metropolitan Boys' Champion. In 1907, he decided to turn professional. He fought his first professional fight as "Kid" Meyer at Paterson's Apollo Hall.
