In the 1930s, the Newark Landsmanshaftn/KUVs had numerous ongoing arrangements with Yiddish-speaking doctors who serviced their mostly working-class members and their families at reduced fees, in return for a monthly payment from the sponsoring organization, based on the number of their members seen.

This same type of arrangement was made with dentists and lawyers.

The arrangement served a double purpose. It provided low-cost professional services to members and their families, and at the same time enabled these professionals--many just starting their practices--to establish themselves and build a following.
