A few items to spark your appetites and long for the "GOOD OLD DAYS". Here were some of the prices paid for good I mean very good food. This during the 1930s. Kaplans Deli on Prince Street any sandwich, corned beef, pastrami, rolled beef, tongue, salami, on rye, 10 cents. Go fancy for a big eater, have it on the "END OF THE RYE BREAD" [horizontal sliced], sorry, that will be 15 cents. Soda, "celery tonic", etc, all 5 cents... Dinner at any of the Chinese Restaurants on Mulberry St, soup, main dish, tea, dessert and even a fortune cookie, 35 cents ... Grants Lunch, three spots, downtown, Hot dogs, 5 cents, roast beef on a small roll 10 cents... A tavern on Lafayette Street near Broad Street , buy a beer for 5 or 10 cents?? and help your self to FREE LUNCH, meat or cheese sandwiches, pickles, hard boiled eggs, and I believe they even had "pigs knuckles" in a 10 gallon jar... At the "candy store " where I worked on Hawthorne Ave [referred to in other items], a malted milkshake cost 10 cents and if you did not get two 10 ounce glasses full, complaints were loud and clear... A bakery in a basement on Broome Street, Schachtels which supplied all the "fancy " eateries [including The Tavern] with those little dinner rolls and great, great rye breads, this was open for the public to shop, usually after midnight till the wee hours... Sorry have to quit for now and get a bite to eat... ENJOY * * *
