1.    In 1886, the year the fight took place, Newark was a city of approximately 175,000.  Although the term "boxer" had been introduced in 1848, it had not yet caught on, and The New York Times still referred to combatants as "pugilists," a term first introduced in 1790. In those years, The Time referred to the sport of boxing as "Pugilism."
