Vailsburg

By Marjorie Moran Martin

I remember calling Newark my home. I was born at Columbus Hospital in 1943. Lived on Brookdale Avenue in Vailsburg in the 40's. I remember swimming at Boylan St. Pool and the hot dog vender right at the entrance. Best hot dogs ever.

I remember the Mayfair and the Stanley movie theaters on South Orange Avenue. It was a time when families lived in the same area, not cross-country. Sacred Heart Church on South Orange Avenue was our house of worship. My sister Barbara received her first communion there.

Later, I resided on Beverly Street. It was at that time I was aware of the political system of Newark, as my dad was a part of it. There was Ralph Villani (mayor), and 4 commissioners, of which dad was one. There was a home around that era that I did not see listed .. Ivy Haven ( for the elderly). It was a great city and one that you were proud to bring your kids up in.
