What's New

1.      I was too young to ride on the Newark bankboard track, and my involvement in Newark cycling did not begin until seven years after the Velodrome was demolished, but I had an opportunity to enjoy the thrill of what it must have been like in September 1940 in Chicago.

In that year and place, at the Humboldt Park Bike Bowl, I pedaled a Schwinn around a similarly constructed bankboard track while attending the U. S. Amateur Cycling Olympics sponsored by the National Cycling Association.

I was there with the New Jersey riders, Fred Graef and Jack Throckmorton, covering the races for the Star Ledger.

In the pre-World War II years, I regularly covered all the amateur bicycle racing programs for the Star-Ledger at Weequahic Park.
